What I did

Asteroid City - Netflix App Animation

Role - UI Designer

Duration - 2 weeks

The Project

This is a personal passion project. I wanted to explore an idea that I feel passionate about, so I decided to go for a more artistic app design. Here I explored a few layouts and decided to focus on animation. The intent of this project is to promote a movie that I really like from a director that I also love and since the movie is so focused on its different characters, it made sense for me to showcase them and make them the central point of the user interface.

The Challenge

The ChallengeFrom the start, the main problem that I encountered was to find a way to make this app feel innovative and artistic, without breaking the UI rules that exist and that have been proven to work. It was also a challenge to make all of that happen without losing the Netflix identity, meaning its design system: typography, colours and buttons.

Prioritise Information

I understood that it was really important to prioritise the most important information. Make sure the movie title and a visually appealing image are prominently displayed, in this case the movie title using its original font and the background image which is the scenario that is present throughout most of the movie.

Understand the Movie Theme

I got familiar with the aesthetic and theme of Wes Anderson's movie "Asteroid City." This helped me create a UI that aligns with the overall feel of the film.

The Characters

Just like any other Wes Anderson movie, there are a lot of colour and colourful characters. These are strong minded individuals that oftentimes have unique personalities. In this sense I wanted to pair each one of them with a colour. After seeing the movie and getting to know the characters, it was a fun exercise to find a colour for each person, that I felt like somehow described that person.

I initiated the wireframe process through sketching sessions. Initial sketches explored various layout possibilities, content hierarchies, and navigational flows. This ideation phase laid the groundwork for translating conceptual ideas into tangible design elements.

The 8-point grid system is a popular and effective framework. It can be used to create consistent and visually pleasing designs for mobile apps. This system is based on the idea that all elements in a design should be positioned and sized in increments of 8 pixels. This grid system helps maintain alignment, consistency, and harmony throughout the interface, resulting in a polished and professional look.

The characteristics of animations for the Netflix iOS app menu promoting "Asteroid City" aligns with the overall theme of Wes Anderson's film while enhancing the user experience and keeping in touch with the Netflix design system. By incorporating these characteristics into the animations, I was able to create an engaging and visually appealing app menu that effectively promotes the movie while providing a delightful user experience.

The animation strategy played a very important role in elevating the Netflix iOS app menu for "Asteroid City." By carefully weaving together elements of elegance, interactivity, and thematic resonance, the animations transformed the user journey into a visually enchanting exploration, setting a high standard for immersive promotional experiences within the streaming platform.

In the pursuit of crafting a captivating user experience for the promotion of Wes Anderson's film "Asteroid City" on the Netflix iOS app, my design and animation choices were guided by a meticulous blend of thematic relevance and user-centric principles.

The animations, characterised by subtlety and cohesiveness, sought to create a seamless journey for users navigating the menu. Smooth transitions, parallax effects, and interactive elements were delicately employed to not only capture attention but to immerse users in the distinctive visual language of Wes Anderson's cinematic universe.
